Senior DevOps Engineer (AWS) - Healthcare Platform

About the Role

We are building a HIPAA-compliant healthcare platform and are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to take full ownership of our AWS infrastructure.

This is a hands-on, senior role with real responsibility. You will design, build, secure, and operate production cloud infrastructure that handles sensitive health data. The role combines deep technical execution with ownership of reliability, security, compliance, and operational excellence.

You will work closely with engineering, security, and compliance to ship and operate a platform that meets the highest standards for PHI handling.

***This is not a one-person HIPAA compliance role.

You will own infrastructure, security implementation, and operational readiness, while working with external compliance and security experts for audits and regulatory requirements.

Engagement & Availability

This role can be structured as either a full-time position or a long-term freelance / contract engagement, depending on the candidate.

Immediate availability is required. We are looking for someone who can start right away and take ownership of the infrastructure from day one.

This is not a part-time or advisory role. Ongoing, hands-on involvement and high availability are expected.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement VPC architecture, security groups, and network segmentation for HIPAA compliance

• Manage RDS PostgreSQL clusters including Multi-AZ, read replicas, backups, and performance tuning

• Build and operate ECS Fargate services with auto-scaling

• Own Terraform infrastructure-as-code across dev, staging, and production

• Implement CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions including approvals and safety gates

• Configure WAF, KMS encryption, Secrets Manager, and Cognito authentication

• Set up CloudWatch monitoring, alerting, and distributed tracing

• Lead incident response, post-mortems, and reliability improvements

• Manage cloud costs, Reserved Instances, and optimization initiatives

• Conduct DR testing and maintain recovery documentation

• Support HIPAA audits with evidence and compliance documentation

• Mentor team members and improve developer experience

Qualifications - Required

• 6+ years of hands-on AWS experience in production

• Strong Terraform expertise including modules, remote state, and multi-environment setups

• Experience with ECS/Fargate or Kubernetes

• RDS PostgreSQL administration and performance optimization

• CI/CD pipeline design and ownership

• Docker containerization

• Security-first mindset including IAM, KMS, encryption, and least privilege

• Monitoring and observability experience

• Incident management and on-call ownership

• Strong documentation and communication skills

Qualifications - Preferred

• Healthcare or HIPAA experience

• SOC 2 or HITRUST exposure

• CloudTrail audit logging and evidence collection

• BAA vendor management

• Redis or ElastiCache

• Performance testing tools
